Stanage Edge
The four-mile gritstone escarpment on Sheffield's doorstep — the spiritual home of British climbing.
Stanage Edge runs for about four miles above the Hope Valley, a wall of gritstone with more than a thousand climbing routes and the millstones still lying below it where they were abandoned.
The path along the top is straightforward walking with enormous views, and it is inside the Peak District National Park but reachable from central Sheffield in half an hour by bus or car — the clearest illustration of why Sheffield calls itself the outdoor city.
