Kelham Island Museum
Industrial museum on a man-made island, home to the thundering River Don Engine.
Kelham Island Museum stands on a working industrial island formed by a mill race cut from the River Don more than 900 years ago. Inside are the workshops, tools and machines that made Sheffield steel, including a recreated Victorian street of little mesters' workshops.
Its centrepiece is the River Don Engine, the most powerful working steam engine in Europe, fired up for demonstrations on museum open days. The surrounding Kelham Island quarter is now one of the city's best areas for independent bars and food.
