Castlegate & Sheffield Castle
The site of Sheffield Castle, where Mary, Queen of Scots was held, now being opened up again.
Castlegate is the oldest corner of Sheffield: the remains of the medieval castle where Mary, Queen of Scots spent fourteen years of captivity lie beneath the site of the old markets.
The area is being cleared and reopened, with the River Sheaf brought back into daylight and the excavated castle remains at the centre of the plans. Interpretation boards explain what is under your feet.
