Sheffield General Cemetery
A wooded Victorian garden cemetery of Egyptian gateways and tumbling gravestones, now a nature reserve.
Opened in 1836 and laid out as a garden cemetery, the General Cemetery is a listed landscape of catacombs, an Egyptian-style gateway, a Nonconformist chapel and around 87,000 burials on a steep wooded slope above the Porter Brook.
It is free and open daily, run largely by volunteers, and doubles as a local nature reserve. Guided tours and open days run through the year.
