Crookes Valley Park is built around the Old Great Dam, one of the reservoirs that once supplied water power to the cutlery works downstream, now a lake ringed by a steep wooded bank.

Together with Weston Park and the Ponderosa it forms a continuous green walk from the university quarter back down towards the city centre.
